Professor Karen Harris lectures University of Delaware students

Posted on February 02, 2016

Professor Karen Harris presented a series of eight lectures on South African history to a group of students from the University of Delaware, USA.  This is the twentieth year Prof Harris has lectured Delaware students and it forms an integral part of their Study Abroad program

The University of Delaware has been sponsoring a study abroad program during its 4 week January Winter session since 1996.  Since then, approximately 425 students have participated in the program. The distinguishing aspect of this study abroad program is its emphasis on “service-learning.”  In addition to academic courses, students engage in service-learning placements at a range of sites including Pretoria-area township primary schools, and orphanages/child care facilities.

Since the program’s inception, Professor Karen Harris has taught a history of South Africa course, which has been well-received by students.

In addition to the courses, the program includes various cultural excursions including tours of Johannesburg and Soweto; the Hector Pieterson Memorial Museum; the Apartheid Museum; Constitution Hill; and Madikwe Game Reserve.  During the final week, the program moves to Cape Town where there are a few more opportunities for cultural exchanges.
