HPC-sponsored athletes shine at African Champs

Team South Africa has retained the title as the leading athletics nation on the continent, finishing top of the medals table for the second successive edition of the CAA African Senior Championships.  
The squad earned a total of 33 medals, including 16 gold, nine silver and eight bronze at the five-day showpiece which came to a close in Durban on Sunday.

Wenda Nel won the women’s 400-hurdles in a time of 54.86 and afterwards claimed more gold as a member of the 4x400 relay team that won in a new SA record time of 3:28.49.

Carina Horn came close to setting a new SA record in the 100m final when she finished second in a time of 11.07s.  She was also part of the SA relay-team that won gold in the 4x100-relay in 43.66s.

Akani Simbine claimed bronze in the 100m running a time of 10.05.  He and Gift Leotlela (Grade 12-learner at TuksSport High Shool) were part of the 4x100-relay team who won in 38.86s. 

Luvo Manyonga impressed with his consistent performance in the long jump. He finished second with a best jump of 8.23m. 

Lebogang Shange claimed a Bronze medal in the 20km race walk event in an Olympic qualifying time of 1:21:41. 

In the men’s 4x400m relay LJ van Zyl anchored the team to bronze in 3:04.73.

Other results:

Orazio Cremona was fifth in the shotput final with a best attempt of 19.15m while Chad Herman finished 6th in the javelin final throwing 71.21m.  

Youth Olympics silver medallist Gezelle Magerman was sixth in the women’s 400m Hurdles in 59.08.
Neither LJ van Zyl nor Cornel Fredericks manage to make the podium in the men’s 400m hurdles.  Van Zyl finished in 4th position in 49.46 while Cornel finished 6th in 49.82s.

Wayne Snyman finished in 4th place in an Olympic qualifying time of 1:22:20.00 while Marc Mundell finished in 12th place in the men’s 20km race walk in a time of 1:44:55.00.
