#TuksFootball: Revenge on the cards for UP-Tuks

Posted on July 22, 2016

UP-Tuks are set to welcome fierce rivals, the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) on Monday, 25 July, at the Tuks Stadium, kick-off is at 19:00.

Many might consider this fixture one the biggest sporting events in Tshwane because of the rivalry that exists between the two institutions. Revenge is on the cards for UP-Tuks as they were knocked out of the competition by TUT last year in the semi-final stage.

Last year's finalists TUT are coming from a narrow 2–1 win over the University of the Witwatersrand while UP-TUKS drew one all against defending champions the University of the Western Cape. Most football pundits would predict a draw for this encounter because the two giants have cancelled each other out in the past, but if the first round of matches is anything to go by, sparks are set to fly at the Tuks stadium on Monday.

Mbongeni Masilela, one of two players from UP-Tuks who have been there since the inception of Varsity Football, stressed the importance of making sure that new players understand the magnitude of the encounter: 'This is the biggest rivalry in student football and it shows how competitive student football can be. For the new players, it is of paramount importance that they understand the history of the rivalry and how this match sets the tone for the whole competition. UP-Tuks players take pride in our excellence and my responsibility is to make sure that new players understand that it is not about getting one over our rivals, but about making sure that we put ourselves in a position to win the title.'
