Varsity Football Women: Tuks Women Cruise Past UJ

Posted on September 10, 2015

Magaia, Chego and Michael on target as the Tuks women’s team cruised past the University of Johannesburg in the opening encounter of the varsity football tournament on Wednesday 09 September 2015.

The home side showed their intentions early on when in the 8th minute Chego made a lone run on the right flank and crossed the ball to Molepo who was on the penalty spot but she failed to connect with the ball. Moments later Chego again managed to round her marker in the penalty box but her final shot was straight at the keeper.

In the 17th minute Mogolola rattled the crossbar with her long range free kick 5 yards from the center circle. In the 19thminute UJ broke on the left and outpaced the Tuks defence but the final cross was too close to the keeper and Siakam was able to collect. In the 21st minute a miscommunication in the UJ defence and a fumble by the keeper gifted Chego the easiest of tap ins to open the scoring and give Tuks the 1-0 lead.

In the 34th minute the UJ keeper came off her line to clear the ball which fell to Mabatle inside the center circle, she attempted a shot at the empty goals but the ball sneaked just over the crossbar. Moments later Michael layed the ball for magaia just outside the penalty box, Magaia chipped the ball over the UJ defence to find Molepo who only needed to stick a foot out to sneak the ball past the keeper but she failed to connect with the ball despite her desperate lunge.

UJ tried to build from the back but Molepo put them under pressure and her hard word was rewarded when an attempted clearance rebounded on Molepo and the ball fell to Michael just outside the penalty box. Her well placed shot beat the keeper and snuck under the crossbar to double the lead for Tuks on the stroke of half time.

After the halftime break Magaia mesmerised the small crowd with her skills in the middle of the park as she dribbled past 5 UJ players to release a through ball to Molepo who could not get to the end of it and it ran harmlessly to the keeper.

UJ made a double substitution and the match became scrappy for the next 20 minutes as Tuks became impatient to score their third goal and UJ defended with all their worth. In the 75th minute Magaia dribbled past the central defender and only had the keeper to beat but her attempt to put the ball through the keeper’s legs failed as the keeper made the save. Tuks were able to win the ball back and it again fell to Magaia who took a low shot just off the ground to beat the diving keeper and the three defenders who were guarding the goal line to make it 3-0 to Tuks.

Tuks XI: Siakam, Maguire, Molefe, Mogolola, Norris, Magaia, Mabatle, Makhura (Nketsi 76’), Molepo (Oliviera 67’), Chego, Michael.
