Message from the Dean

The Faculty of Theology is the biggest of its kind in South Africa, the oldest faculty (not seminary) and also the most productive.

I challenge you with this question: “Why not the best for you?”And I wish to answer this on your behalf. There are three reasons why we are the best:

In terms of academic excellence we are a world renowned research University; our professors and Faculty are sought after all over the globe to participate in conferences, international liaisons and agreements. Very importantly, our students are also sought after for students’ exchange programmes with different universities overseas, including Europe and America.
Secondly, our Faculty encompasses different partners, namely the Uniting Presbyterian Church in Southern Africa, the Uniting Reformed Church, the Lutherans, Baptists, and the African Institute for Missiology. Diversity is very important to us, and we also have many students, perhaps more than half, who are not attached to any of these partners mentioned.

Thirdly, it is important for our people, theologians and students alike, to be engaged within our communities. Therefore we have a number of outreach programmes in terms of missiology, polity and poverty alleviation, to mention but a few. You will find our students all over Africa; busy doing what God has called them to.

Come and join us in this Faculty of Theology, and I promise…you won’t regret it!

Prof Johan Buitendag
Dean: Faculty of Theology
