The Director of the Centre for Contextual Ministry of the Faculty of Theology of the University of Pretoria, Dr Stephan de Beer, cordially invites you to a workshop on Reconciliation with Restitution.

Instead of moving closer to each other as South Africans, and further away from the past, the past few years seem to have surfaced deep and unresolved wounds and anger with many people.

Issues of racism, economic inequalities, gender and sexual violence and spatial segregation continue to plague our society in numerous ways. A research project on Social Justice and Reconciliation, hosted by the Centre for Contextual Ministry in the Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, brings together a small group of action researchers, committed to issues of social justice and reconciliation, but also to scholarly rigour and engaged research.

This group is now hosting a one-day seminar titled Reconciliation with Restitution. The day is divided into four sessions with panelists who are seasoned practitioners in their fields, but also deep thinkers on the topics under discussion. Do not miss the opportunity to engage in critical, constructive, and transformative conversations on this day. It is now more important than ever that we wrestle together with these topics, if we are to be God’s healing people. We would like to discern on this day what healing and wholeness will entail if it brings together the dual commitments to both reconciliation and restitution, suggesting that one without the other will always be insufficient and incomplete.

The programme is outlined below:

  • Restitution, forgiveness and reparation
  • Healing of historical trauma
  • Restorative justice in the face of violence
  • Spatial justice, faith communities and restitution and
  • Closing reflections.
