In his lecture, Prof Almeida will give an introduction to the bioecology of arboviruses and mosquitoes. Studies aimed at identifying mosquito vectors and surveys on the presence of West Nile virus in Portugal will be presented. Further studies have focussed on monitoring and surveillance in different ecological settings in the face of climate change and human-made environmental changes, such as the building of dams, with risk analysis of mosquito-borne emerging and re-emerging diseases. These studies were undertaken in collaboration with remote detection specialists.
Prof Almeida will report on collaboration with UP’s Centre for Viral Zoonoses (UP CVZ) on the bioecology of mosquito vectors of arboviruses in some areas of South Africa with the focus on species composition, seasonal dynamics, viral screening and molecular systematics.
Brief biographical sketch
Paulo Gouveia de Almeida is an associate professor in Medical Entomology/Parasitology at the
Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University NOVA of Lisboa, Portugal. Since 2011 he has been a visiting and extraordinary professor at UP CVZ collaborating with Prof M Venter.
He holds the following academic qualifications: a medical degree from the University of Lisbon; a diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the Royal College of Physicians, London; an MSc in Medical Parasitology from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and a PhD in Medical Entomology/Parasitologyfrom the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine (ICSTM), University of London.
He researches and teaches Medical Entomology and Parasitology, has coordinated the MSc course in Medical Parasitology at University NOVA of Lisboa, Portugal and has also taught at the universities of Oporto and Algarve, as well as other faculties in Portugal, and the University Eduardo Mondlane in Maputo, Mozambique.
His main areas of interest are anti-vector (mosquito and tick) immunity and vector–parasite relationships; mosquito vectors of arboviruses (West Nile fever and dengue), malaria, filariasis, vector incrimination, and epidemiology; mosquito systematics, molecular biology, bioecology, and surveillance and control studies in different ecological settings; climate change; and risk analysis of mosquito-borne diseases. He has led various research projects in these fields, supervised several postgraduate degrees, and acted as a consultant for the Portuguese National Directorate of Health and the European Centre for Disease Control (ECDC).
Prof Almeida has authored or co-authored more than 48 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters.
