On 23-24 April the University hosted the annual meeting of the United Nations Academic Advisory Council on Mediation. The Director of the Centre for Mediation in Africa at UP, Prof Laurie Nathan, is one of the members of the Council. Other members include academics from Brazil, Canada, Sweden, Turkey and the United States. They were joined by senior UN officials and local academics. According to Prof Nathan, the main theme of the meeting was the relationship between the UN and regional organisations in mediation endeavours on the continent and other parts of the world. He said that the discussion was especially significant because it would inform the preparation of the UN Secretary-Generals forthcoming report on this topic.

At lunchtime on 23 April the Centre and the Department of Political Sciences hosted an open seminar with Council members on the topic of the relevance of culture to international mediation. On the evening of the 23rd, Prof Nathan and other Council participants spoke at a dinner-seminar arranged by the governments Department of International Relations and Cooperation. This provided an opportunity for diplomats and academics to share perspectives on mediation in Syria, South Sudan and other countries.
