The presentation focuses on creating a better understanding of professions in various socio-political contexts, and in so doing, enhancing their operation through reform. These are also some of the main themes in the work of Professor Mike Saks on the social scientific study of professions in a number of countries, including the United Kingdom, North America and Russia. The examples given are principally drawn from his empirical studies of health and social care, but the presentation also covers more general theoretical and methodological issues in the professions field. It will conclude with some reflections on research on the professions in South Africa.
