Dr Duncan Reyburn

Humanities 2014 Faculty Researcher of the Year, Arts Cluster

Department of Visual Arts

Dr Duncan Reyburn (BA Information Design, MA Visual Studies, PhD Visual Studies) has been a full-time lecturer in both practical and theoretical subjects at the University of Pretoria since 2007. Before shifting his focus to academia, he worked as an animator, a comic artist, designer, design consultant and television commercial director.

Duncan's research focuses on the philosophies of the inventive and prolific writer G K Chesterton and their applicability to philosophical hermeneutics. His ongoing fascination is with the interpretive experience, and in particular with the material and philosophical conditions that shape human awareness. As can be observed in the various articles he has written and in chapters contributed to books, his research navigates the intersection of philosophy, theology and visual culture. He is currently working on a monograph on Chesterton’s writings, which he hopes will be finished before the next apocalypse.

Dr Reyburn's Researcher of the Year Award

was sponsored by the Hatfield Group.
