Topic:  "Differential Privacy of Sensitive Information in Practice (Big Data)”

In August Professor Rebecca Wright visited the Department Computer Science at University of Pretoria.  Professor Wright, is a professor in the Computer Science Department and Director of DIMACS at Rutgers University in the US. During her visit she gave a lecture as part of the EBIT Open Lecture Series on Big Data Science. This lecture included an overview of the Data Science initiatives at Rutgers University (USA) highlighting collaboration opportunities between UP and Rutgers. She also gave a lecture on "Differential Privacy of Sensitive Information in Practice (Big Data)”. Differential privacy has been put forth as a promising technique for protecting the privacy of individuals while still enabling the use of data in many applications. From a Big Data perspective she showed how differential privacy can be applied in the contexts of human mobility modelling and anomaly detection.
