Dr Paul Smit lectures at three Russian universities

Posted on September 22, 2017

Dr Paul Smit from the Department of Human Resource Management recently visited Russia, where he presented lectures at three different Russian universities and chaired a session at an international Brics conference.

On 11 September 2017, Dr Smit gave a lecture at the National Research University, Higher School of Economics (HSE) in Moscow. The title of his lecture was ‘South Africa’s Employment Equity Act: You can discriminate as long as it is fair discrimination’. The lecture was very well attended by faculty members of the HSE and students. A lively discussion was held after the lecture and centred around concepts of equality and discrimination from South African and Russian perspectives.

On 12 September 2017, Dr Smit gave a lecture at the Kutafin State Law Academy (MSAL) in Moscow. The title of the lecture was ‘South Africa’s dismissal law in light of Convention 158 of the International Labour Organisation (ILO)’ and was well attended by faculty members, students and labour lawyers from Russia. It was very interesting to draw comparisons between Russian and South African dismissal law in light of international standards. The information about this lecture and a photograph of Dr Smit was also tweeted by the Embassy of the Russian Federation in South Africa on their official twitter account.

Dr Smit is also a member of the senior editorial council of the Kutafin University Law Review, one of the most prominent and highly-rated law journals in Russia that publishes in English.

On 14 and 15 September 2017, Dr Smit attended the International Brics Global Business & Innovation Conference that was held at the National Research University in St Petersburg. Dr Smit chaired the track on ‘Human Capital – a Key Driver of Development’. He also delivered a paper at the conference, entitled. 'Establishing a scientific and educational research centre on labour relations / labour law in Brics’. This paper was extremely well received and already led to an invitation to visit the St Petersburg State University in March 2018, where a working group of Labour Law academics from the five Brics member states will meet to lay the groundwork for drafting a MoU for the establishment of such a centre.
