Prof Thornhill to serve as African co-editor of Local Economy journal

Posted on September 07, 2017

The Journal of the Local Economy Policy Unit of the London South Bank University, published by Sage, has appointed Prof Chris Thornhill as its co-editor for Africa, effective from August 2017. Prof Thornhill, professor emeritus in the School of Public Management and Administration (SPMA), brings with him more than 25 years of research experience on issues related to local government. The various topics he has written on have seen him travelling to African and European countries for research purposes, as well as Japan, where he was part of a research team focusing on Japanese local government.

“I consider it a privilege to have been invited to serve on the editorial board. It provides the
SPMA and the discipline of public administration another avenue to publish in accredited journals. As this is an international, highly respected journal, it allows academics and other scholars from Africa to publish and test new concepts and theories,” says Prof Thornhill.

He explains that this peer-reviewed journal has been published since 1986, with eight issues published annually. It is also International Bibliography of the Social Sciences (IBSS) accredited and Scopus indexed.

He will be joined by Prof Kedibone Phago from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, who will also serve as a co-editor for Africa. Prof Thornhill outlines their role: “As co-editors we are responsible for soliciting articles from African authors on sub-national issues; assisting the chief editor with the flow of articles from the African continent; organising special editions; and we may also publish our own articles.”

Prof Thornhill’s first article in the journal was published in Vol 32(5) 2017 and was co-authored with Marié Oosthuizen. “I look forward to inviting my colleagues to contribute to future editions of the journal,” he says.
