National Treasury visits UP’s Department of Economics

Posted on March 18, 2015

The Department of Economics hosted a number of members of the National Treasury, including the Director-General, Lungisa Fuzile, and the Deputy Director-General of the Budget Office, Michael Sachs, on 12 March 2015. Their visit, coordinated by Dr Mampho Modise, an alumnus of the Department of Economics, was part of National Treasury's Budget Outreach Programme.

The Programme seeks to create a platform for interaction between policymakers within National Treasury, academic staff, and – most importantly – students, as they will become the academic staff and policymakers of the future. The Director-General (DG) presented a summarised version of the 2015 Budget, focusing on the economic assumptions underpinning that budget. A lively question and answer session followed the presentation.

During the session, the DG described the progressivity of the South African fiscal system, while the Deputy Director-General (DDG) described the budget changes (this year compared to previous years) reflecting the current international economic realities and our ability to incentivise economic growth, in the face of these economic realities. At the end of the session, many students and staff members of the Department of Economics had the opportunity to rub shoulders with the DG and DDG.
