Research on SA economics presented in Greece

Posted on January 27, 2015

Prof Roula Inglesi-Lotz of the Department of Economics visited the University of Macedonia in Greece and presented her current research. The topic of her presentation was “Environmental Kuznets Curve in South Africa: to confirm or not to confirm?”.

In this paper she tested the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis on the latest available South African data by using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) econometric method. Using proxies for environmental quality such as CO2 emissions, energy intensity and renewable energy, the long term relationship between growth in income per capita and environmental quality is tested. Prof Inglesi-Lotz said she found no conclusive evidence to support the EKC hypothesis.

“Given the unique nature of the South African economy being at its initial stages of development, the results may indicate that the economy is still transitioning through the early stages of the inverted U-shape Kuznets curve.”
