Word of welcome

Welcome to the virtual home of the Department of Economics at the University of Pretoria, one of the leading academic institutions on the African continent. We are fortunate to be located in Pretoria, which is the administrative capital of South Africa and the centre of policymaking in the country as well. Pretoria is also close to Sandton, the financial capital of South Africa.

We have been able to leverage our comparative advantage in location – proximity to South African policymakers and financial institutions – to recruit excellent faculty and train the next generation of academics and policymakers. Our faculty undertakes research and provides academic leadership in monetary and fiscal policy, economic growth and development, health policy and trade policy. We are also working to build capacity in support of teaching and research objectives related to financial markets and political economy.

We are excited about the future prospects of South Africa and the rest of the African continent. The majority of our faculty and students hail from South Africa and many other countries on the continent, and we have working relationships with many African research, teaching and development institutions.

If you are a prospective student or the parent of a prospective student, rest assured. We offer an internationally recognised degree, while helping students develop the skills desired by public and private sector employers in South Africa and beyond. Our students find jobs both locally and internationally, and many of our students have successfully pursued further studies in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.
