The Investment and Trade Policy Centre was also established in 2002 with the view to train public officials involved with Trade and Investment in their countries, whether they negotiate trade agreements with other countries, work in customs offices, or represent their countries in foreign missions. UNCTAD and the WTO presented a course in negotiation skills on campus in 2002 and again in 2003.
REHHaB - Research into the Economics of Health, Households and Behaviours
The Department has begun to develop a research group focusing on Household Economic Behaviour. The group is chaired by Prof Steven Koch, and includes Mr Gauthier Tshiswaka-Kashalala and a number of PhD students in the Department of Economics. The focus of this group’s research is on decisions made within households. Recent research by the group has examined the effect of user fee abolition in South Africa and Zambia, household energy consumption in South Africa and Ethiopia and the effects of forest policy on Ethiopian households. Current research by the group is extending the analysis to health insurance coverage and its effects on health care utilisation, as well as fertility in a number of sub-Saharan African countries. It is expected that this research will also delve into household savings behaviour. Research from this group is beginning to make its way into leading international journals, such as Social Science & Medicine, Health Policy and Planning, Ecological Economics, Forest Policy and Economics, and Energy Economics, amongst others.
