Johan Heyns as interdisciplinary theologian re-evaluated during memorial lecture

Posted on April 19, 2016

The Faculty of Theology is hosting the annual Johan Heyns Memorial Lecture on 25 May 2016 in the Senate Hall of the University of Pretoria.

The lecture, themed 'Johan Heyns as Interdisciplinary Theologian? Re-evaluating whether or not his work can today still successfully contribute to contemporary theological debates', will be led by Prof Wentzel van Huyssteen.

Prof Johan Heyns was a lecturer in the Department of Dogmatics and Christian Ethics in the University of Pretoria's Faculty of Theology from 1971 until his retirement in 1993. In November 1994 he died tragically at the hand of an unidentified assassin.

Not only did he make a significant contribution to the South African society by means of his reformative thinking in the fields of dogma and ethics, he also stood out as a cultured human being who had a talent for building bridges to promote reconciliation in the political turmoil experienced in South Africa prior to 1994.

Prof Wentzel van Huyssteen is one of two NRF A-rated South African researchers. He was a professor at Princeton University for more than twenty years, and in his retirement now serves as extraordinary professor at Stellenbosch University. He was the first South African academic who reviewed Heyns's work critically. He was also the first South African theologian to deliver the acclaimed Gifford Lectures in Scotland.

You are kindly invited to the Johan Heyns Memorial Lecture. View the formal invitation.
