The Special Collections Book of the Week this week is:

Big African States edited by Christopher Clapham, Jeffrey Herbst and Greg Mills

Angola, Sudan, DRC, Ethiopia, Nigeria and South Africa. In this study of six African ‘big states’, specialists across a range of disciplines analyse the country-specific factors which have led to all but one of these states being described as dysfunctional.

They explore those cross-cutting issues – such as leadership, rebellion, lootable commodities, and engagement with the international political and economic system – which affect all of these states and which may have contributed to ‘dysfunctionality’. Finally, the conclusion considers policy implications that emerge from the study.
