South Africa in World War ll: a pictorial history edited by John Keene.

The decision by the South African government on 6 September 1939 to enter World War ll on the side of Great Britain and her allies against Nazi Germany was not easily taken. The country was politically divided on the issue and ill prepared for hostilities in a modern war. Her forces were small and understrength, their equipment antiquated or non existent. Despite all these drawbacks, once the decision was taken, the nation set to with a will.

More than half a century later memories of the tumultuous war years have begun to fade away while the ranks of those who volunteered shrink year by year. They should be remembered for the honour they brought to the country, and this book is an attempt to commemorate them and their deeds.
