Donation of African Language Classics

Posted on January 19, 2017

Following up on a report published in the July/August/September issue of the Staff newsletter, entitled Donation from the National Library of South Africa, it can now be reported that the donated books have been catalogued and our holdings have been added to WorldCat.

The donated titles form part of the National Library’s Reprint of South African Classics Project (RSACP), as initiated by the Department of Arts and Culture (DAC).

Since the donation included multiple copies of certain titles, it was decided to divide the books between the Merensky Library (Faculty Library of Humanities), the Education Library and the Mamelodi Campus Library.

By making these titles available in our libraries, the DLS certainly contributes to the goals of the RSACP, which amongst others include the promotion of literacy and the reading of indigenous language material; the celebration and recognition of our classical writers; and the creation of awareness for our South African literary heritage.

Thank you to Viveka Pillai (Information Specialist: African Languages), for receiving the donation on behalf of the DLS and Raesibe Kekana (Cataloguer: African Languages), for cataloguing the collection, which is now accessible through the WorldShare Discovery Tool.
