Curiosities from the Cabinet: Collections from Museum Storage - exhibition in the Merensky 2 Library

The Department of Library Services, in association with the Department of UP Arts, invites you to this extraordinary temporary exhibition featuring a selection of little boxes.

The museum collections of the Department of UP Arts have in their storage an extraordinary range of unusual objects. For this temporary exhibition we decided to showcase little boxes or containers, which were always more than mere functional objects. These little boxes, dating from the 19th to the 21st century, contained trinkets, jewellery, cigarettes and tea leaves (or some unknown object or material). There are square boxes, round boxes and rectangular boxes, made of ceramic, wood or metal while some are lacquerware with numerous decorative motifs, carved or filigreed in silver. Some of the boxes originated in Indonesia and Japan.
