Assupol TuksCricket Appoint New Club Captain

Posted on October 17, 2016

Assupol TuksCricket appointed a new Club Captain in Tony de Zorzi at the start of the 2016/2017 season, when previous captain, Murray Coetzee, stepped down after the Red Bull Campus Cricket World Finals.

Coetzee decided to step down as captain to improve his own game, “I’ve really enjoyed my time as Captain at Assupol TuksCricket and it has been a very big honour for me to lead the team. I’m very happy that we managed to achieve a certain amount of success under my captaincy. I’ve been honoured and enjoyed working with Pierre de Bruyn, Chris van Noordwyk and Kruger van Wyk as coaches while captaining various sides at Tuks; they made my job very easy as captain. We decided for the good of my own game to step time down as captain and ultimately, if I do better the team will do better. We felt that Tony was a guy, even though he is young, has a mature head on his shoulders and he has the full support and backing from the whole team. We definitely feel that he is the right guy to take the team forward. We are sure that we’ll enjoy much success under him. It is exciting times, a new season, a new chapter for TuksCricket and I’m sure that we can replicate a lot of the success we had in the past. I’m looking forward to playing more cricket purely as a batsman in the side and hopefully the responsibilities of no longer being captain can help me score a lot more runs for Tuks this season.”

The newly appointed captain, Tony de Zorzi, is one of the youngest players ever to captain Assupol Tuks 1 but has had a great start since he took over. The 19 year old, first year student, started at Tuks at the being of the year after captaining the SA u19 side. Assupol TuksCricket Head Coach, Kruger van Wyk said, “I believe that Tony is a fine young leader. He shows all the credentials and values that we see important in a Captain to lead our boys. Everyone is behind him and excited to see his growth not only as a player but as a leader in our system. He has had a great start to the season as a captain and he’ll only keep getting better.”

De Zorzi, has taken up the challenge and looks forward to the season, “I’m very excited to be the new captain at Assupol TuksCricket. I am a young guy leading a team of older players but it is a very good group of players – very mature guys – and I’m sure we will do a job good in taking TuksCricket forward. While I’m wearing the badge, I’ll do it with pride and I’ll try lead the team as well as I can. Hopefully we’ll have a good season going forward, looking forward to the NCU Competitions & USSA end place at the end of this year and just playing good, hard Tuks branded cricket.”
