Red Bull Campus Cricket World Finals 2016

Posted on September 19, 2016

Sri Lanka treated the team to the friendliest people, unique cultural experiences and world class facilities – both on and off the field. Here is some feedback from the team:

Kruger van Wyk (Head Coach) - The Sri Lanka edition of the Red Bull Campus Cricket World Finals was a privilege to be a part of even though it was disappointing that we didn't defend out title. I'm very proud of the team on the way they conducted themselves and grew throughout the week. It was a very well organized tournament and I can only see the profile of this competition growing in the future.

Murray Coetzee (Captain) - The Red Bull Campus Cricket World Finals was an awesome experience for everyone involved. We were disappointed to lose in the Semi-Final especially to the host nation. The boys put in as much prep as they could but couldn't cross the line on the field on the day. Off the field we had a very special squad and everyone was able to work together and it was an awesome experience for a bunch of students to go to a place which wouldn't have gone to if it weren't for cricket. We made a lot of special memories and it will be a tour that myself and the rest of the boys will look back on with fond memories. We will pushing hard to get to next year's tournament and hopefully we'll be able to bring back the trophy again next year.

Vincent Moore - This year's tournament was another great experience of different people, cultures and cricket! We were treated to unbelievable accommodation and all the beautiful scenery Sri-Lanka has to offer. The cricket was of a much higher standard this year and every match was competitive. We were disappointed with not winning the competition this year but we will be back and ready to take back our title next year.

David Mogotlane - Red Bull Campus Cricket World Finals 2016 was really an awesome experience. Red Bull Sri-Lanka and the tournament organizers really went out of their way to make the experience unique and truly Sri-Lankan which I really enjoyed. For us as a team it was obviously disappointing to be knocked out of the semi-finals but we had the opportunity to play at international grounds which for me personally is something to remember and cherish. The energizer over is new and exciting and there were times when it worked for us and times when it worked against us. I think most teams will have mixed feelings about the over, I definitely do but whether or not it is there for the long term it definitely adds a new dimension to the game and brings something else to consider while playing.

Lungi Ngidi - It was a good experience in tough conditions, especially with the constant heat and humidity but I was happy to bowl in those conditions and thought it was better to bowl in than in India. Overall, I'm happy and it was a good learning experience. It is beautiful country and I won't mind going back there anytime soon.

Blake Schraader - Sri-Lanka is a beautiful place with the most wonderful people and it was an absolute privilege to be a part of the tournament. It was awesome to see how cricket is loved in a different part of the world and it made me treasure the sport even more!

Tony de Zorzi - Sri-lanka was a beautiful country and not at all what I was expecting. I've been to Bangladesh and I was expecting something similar but Colombo and Galle were really beautiful and completely different. The people of Sri-Lanka were very welcoming and friendly and spending time with locals out in the towns we got to know the people and they are very happy people and very content in who they are as a country. Red Bull did an awesome job to give us the full experience in the little towns and places they took us to and made it accessible for us to walk around and really experience the country. In Galle the beach was magnificent and the whole team really enjoyed it. I wouldn't mind going back there any day, even if on a family holiday. Thanks very much to Red Bull for such an amazing experience. The energizer over was interesting for us but in the first game against England and our batsman, Rubin Hermann used it very well and I think in the other games it wasn't a major factor for us. Teams will still get used to it and if you know how to use it well it can be very beneficial for your team but unfortunately if you don't use it well, bowling our batting, it can hamper a team's performance.

Roger Arendse - The tournament was an interesting experience and it was great meeting guys from all over the world that are as passionate as we are and have the desire to make it to eventually play at a higher level. I definitely learned a lot form how the different teams approach the game especially from the subcontinent teams. It would have been amazing to win it but other than that it was a great experience to be at the tournament and to represent my country.

Ruben Hermann - Red Bull Campus Cricket World Finals 2016 really was an amazing experience and a very professionally run event. It gives us as varsity players from all over the world a taste of what it is to be a professional cricketer and how it is like playing all over the world as well as playing in conditions that you aren't used to like Sri Lanka this year. The energizer over brings a whole new challenge to the game and it is interesting to see how each individual and team goes about approaching the tactics of the over. So it was interesting to see how it played out and when teams took the over and what tactics were involved to utilize the over to their advantage whether you were the batting or bowling team. It is a new challenge and I'm quite excited to see how it develops and how it will evolve the game and change the skills and plans involved in that over. It was an amazing experience and we hope to be back again next year!!

Willie Ludick - This years Red Bull Campus Cricket World Finals was a very big success for me personally. I really enjoyed the experience and we were hosted in great hotels and enjoyed the scenery that Sri-Lanka had to offer. Unfortunately we lost in the Semi-Finals which wasn't ideal but besides that I really enjoyed the experience. Regarding the Energizer Over, T20 matches are already a very short format of the game where anything can happen and the energizer over brings all the teams closer to each other and so it makes it difficult to see who the better team was on the day. I understand that it is a crowd pleaser and that it brings a whole new excitement to the match but from a cricketing point of view I didn't enjoy it very much as you can have a very good game but it can be taken away from you in one over by a few good hits or a wicket or two falling. I guess there is some skill behind it but personally I felt it wasn't great. But other than that the tournament was a huge success from a playing point of view and an organizational point of view.

Thomas Kaber - Thank you to Red Bull for creating an event like the Red Bull Campus Cricket World Finals. The tournament has enriched campus cricket with opportunities and by qualifying you are treated to a once in a life time experience as it was for me this year in Sri Lanka. A time I will never forget - being treated by traditional dancers, tuk-tuk rides and even the excitement of playing in the unpredictable energizer over.

Evan Jones - My personal point of view was that this year's tournament was much more organized than previous years and I really enjoyed it and had loads of fun. The fields were great and the pitches were well prepared and the service was awesome. It was a really good tournament and the experience was amazing.

Sean Phillips - The opportunity we had to experience the Sri Lankan culture and food was something I never thought I'd do. The people were extremely friendly and just wanted to help us enjoy our time in their beautiful country. It was a great event that was well organized and we stayed in the most beautiful places. The competition between the teams was very strong and everyone really wanted to win the tournament. Red Bull Campus Cricket World Finals 2016 was an amazing experience both on and off the field.

Gerry Pike - Red Bull Campus Cricket World Finals 2016 was a great experience - Sri Lanka is a beautiful country with very friendly people. The competition this year was very strong and the teams were all up for it.
