Students enrolled in the compulsory undergraduate module, Community-based Project Module (JCP) if the Faculty Engineering Built Environment and Information Technology worked with Keep That Gold shining society on campus, in a community project. Keep That Gold shining is a community based organization which was initiated by University students. The main aim of the organization is to unleash the potential of high school students and make them realize the importance of education.

During March 37 JCP-students and 7 volunteers tutored Grade 10 and 11 learners of eMakhosini Combined Secondary School, Botse-Botse Secondary School and Soshanguve Secondary School. To make the tutoring interesting, the tutoring structure was transformed a competition structure. Learners had to write two tests of which the first one was an introductory test and the second was the final test to measure the average improvement of the learners.

The learners showed a lot of improvement after the tutoring. One of the learners from eMakhosini Secondary School improved from 36% to 99%.

The JCP students bought stationary for the learners, booked a hall for the awards ceremony, booked transport, bought awards for the best achievers, rented busses to transport students from their schools to the hall for the awards and motivational talk. Some students willingly assisted with finances since some of them had to travel from Centurion to Soshanguve. JCP students were given certificates of appreciation at the end of the project.

The project was a success and it is planned to have an annual Mathematics competition in which the JCP students will be responsible for.
