Now available: "Interactive Mathematics for Laboratory Medicine"- a digital interactive book for clinical laboratory mathematics

The first digitally interactive mathematics textbook in South Africa is now available in September 2015.  The book is by Prof T.S. Pillay and designed to teach trainees how to deal with common calculations in laboratory medicine. The book is highly interactive and a preview of the book can be seen on Youtube. The purpose of this book is to facilitate an introduction to calculations in clinical laboratory science and laboratory medicine. Many trainees struggle with calculations required for an understanding of some of the processes in the clinical laboratory. This book is unique in many aspects as it contains inbuilt calculator widgets which can be called up  when the reader is working through the calculations. These widgets can also be used when the reader is working through calculations  from other books.
There are numerous review questions scattered through the chapters and there are explanatory presentations and movies of the calculations with answers. Ideally, the reader should try to work through each calculation manually before calling up the review answer or looking at the explanation. The calculator widgets should only be used once the reader has grasped the fundamental concepts. In order to generate the explanatory media, Prof Pillay used a tablet and drawing pen to mimic a real-time effect of a teacher writing out the answer on the board. This is another unique feature of this book. The book is meant to be interactive and provide a stimulating medium to learn clinical laboratory mathematics, in contrast to the traditional 2-dimensional book.
