High molecular weight Adiponectin is low in HIV patients treated with protease inhibitors

Researchers in the Department of Chemical Pathology have shown that high molecular weight adiponect, the active form of the insulin-sensitizing hormone adiponectin is significantly reduced after Highly active anti-retorviral therapy, particularly with protease inhibitors.

The research was a collaboration between the Universities of Cape  Town and Pretoria and Prof T.S. Pillay was the principal investigator.

The research is described in BMC Clinical Pathology.
