Researchers from the CEA participates in transformation and decolonization debates

Posted on November 08, 2017

The Centre for Evaluation and Assessment (CEA) researchers participated in the debates by presenting current research. Ms Nangamso Mtsatse (from UNISA) and Ms Celeste Combrinck (CEA) presented on how to decolonise African languages, specifically disseminating a study which involved Grade 1 isiXhosa learners in the Western Cape. Their conclusion was that much more research is needed on the complexities of dialects in African languages and how this affects learners.

They argued that decolonization can only take place if resources are developed within the African languages by home language speakers. Mrs Karen Roux (CEA) presented on designing a framework to validate large-scale assessment studies focusing on the aspects of translation and textual features of these assessments. Mrs Roux maintained that it is of key importance to establish whether large-scale assessments in South Africa are valid and fair across the different languages.
