Prof Brenda Louw will be visiting the Centre for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (CAAC) at the University of Pretoria (UP) in May and will be presenting an informative workshop titled, 'Cleft lip/palate: Best practice and recent developments'.

Prof Brenda Louw is Head of the Department Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology at East Tennessee State University in the USA and Professor Emeritus at the University of Pretoria. She teaches courses on research methods and craniofacial disorders, and mentors students conducting research projects. She has extensive clinical experience in early intervention and cleft palate. She was the recipient of a Carnegie Foundation African Diaspora Fellowship, in collaboration with Prof Juan Bornman of the CAAC, hosted by UP in 2015 and 2016. Prof Louw is the Director of a Tennessee Teacher Training Grant and is a faculty member of the Vanderbilt Consortium's Leadership and Education in Neurodevelopmental Disorders (LEND) grant. She has been the ASHA (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association) Convention Topic Chair for Global Issues and Practices across the Professions since 2014. She is an invited Expert Reviewer for the ASHA Practice Portal: Craniofacial Disorders – Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate, and participated in the development of its content. Her current research interests are application of the International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health for Children and Youth to cleft lip and palate, multiculturalism and paediatric HIV/AIDS. She has published extensively and presented at conventions on five continents. Prof Louw is a Fellow of the South African Speech-Language-Hearing Association and celebrates her 40th year in the profession in 2017.
