The Faculty of Humanities at the University of Pretoria cordially invites you to our International Museum Day Public Lecture presented by Dr Anikó Bezur.

Dr Anikó Bezur has a PhD in materials science and engineering from the University of Arizona. She was the Andrew W Mellon research scientist for the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, and the Menil Collection (2008–2012), an associate conservation scientist at the Art Institute of Chicago, and a lecturer and assistant professor of conservation science in the Art Conservation Department at Buffalo State College. She currently works as Head of Scientific Research at Yale University’s Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage.

Analysis and imaging of human-made objects can give insight into their makers’ access to and choice of materials and technological processes, and can reveal how artefacts have been changed through human intervention and degradation. While the ‘decoded’ materiality of objects is often woven into exhibition narratives with an anthropological focus, it is comparably rare in displays of fine and decorative art objects, photographs, and manuscripts. This talk presents case studies from Yale University that illustrate how scientists, conservators, imaging specialists and students can help objects voice their own stories, and how this can impact their presentation.
