Johan Heyns was a lecturer in the Department of Dogmatics and Christian Ethics in the University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Theology (Division B) from 1971 until his retirement in 1993. In November 1994 he died tragically at the hand of an unidentified assassin.

Not only did he make a significant contribution to the South African society by means of his reformative thinking in the fields of dogma and ethics, he also stood out as a cultured human being who had a talent for building bridges to promote reconciliation in the political turmoil experienced in South Africa prior to 1994.
