‘I am interested in exploring the possibilities for cultivating children’s creativity presented by Ghanaian play songs and dilemma tales. In the Ghanaian context, play songs and tales dealing with dilemmas are very closely related, as many play songs are often also dilemma tales. Drawing on some play songs and dilemma tales from two different Ghanaian cultures, Kasen and Akan, and examining written works of fiction that use material from them, I demonstrate how these oral genres call forth high intelligence, imagination, originality and reasoning, thus fostering children’s creative thinking.’ − Professor Helen Yitah
