Prof Al-Ninowy delivers public lecture

Prof Al-Ninowy of the Madina Institute in Georgia presented a public lecture, themed ‘Religion and violence’ on 10 May 2017, as a guest lecturer in the Programme for Biblical and Religious Studies.

Al-Ninowy, who was born in Aleppo, Syria,  is regarded as a Sayyid, which means that he is a descendant of the Islamic prophet Muhammad  through prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Husayn ibn 'Ali. His family traces their origin to the southern Iraqi village of Ninowa, called Karbala, which is where Husayn ibn 'Ali (Prophet Muhammad’s grandson) was martyred.

Al-Ninowy is the founder and senior-in-residence scholar of Madina Institute, Inc. (a masjid and seminary) in Duluth, Georgia since 2012. He has authored many books in the science of Tawhid, Hadith, and Usul, some of which are being translated into English and published.

As medical doctor, he has done extensive research in oncology (more specifically in breast cancer). He has also recently launched the Center for Non-violence and Peace Studies at Madina Institute USA and in South Africa. The goal of these studies is "to continue the Madinan School of Nonviolence and Peace as laid down in the Prophetic example, and to challenge global extremism, in both its violent and nonviolent forms".

He has acquired the following qualifications:

1. Bachelors of Theology – Al-Azhar University, Egypt / Syria, 1991.
2. Masters of Divinity – Islamic Dawah College, Libya, 1993.
3. PhD – Islamic Dawah College, Sudan, 1996.
4. Bachelor’s degree – General Studies and Microbiology, Western Illinois University, Macomb, 2003.
5. M.D. – Doctor of Medicine Degree, Eastern Central University, 2000.
6. MPh – University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Al-Ninowy has published numerous articles and travels worldwide hosting conferences and lectures at different universities and education institutions. He is considered to be one of the 500 most influential Muslim scholars in the world. He is currently the author of eight books, some published and others in the process of being publishing.
