The USSA Badminton tournament was of a high standard this year which lead to strong competition in the team and individual events.

Tuks did not have strong individuals this year but had a very balanced team, the men’s section slightly stronger than the women.  The players played very well in both the “A” and “B” sections.  The “A” section winning bronze by beating Wits and UCT 3 – 2 and losing to Maties 2 – 3 and Pukke 1 – 4.

The “B” section players made us proud by winning their section after some strong competition.  They only lost by a narrow margin to TUT 2 – 3 and beat Maties 3 – 2, NWU–M 5 – 0, and Pukke 3 – 2.

In the individual competition Tuks players did very well once again.  In the men’s section there were opposition players that represent their provincial teams and in the women’s section there were two National players and a few provincial players.

A. Nair got the best result by reaching the final in the men’s doubles and only losing 21-18; 19-22; 21-23, it was a very exciting match. He also reached the mixed quarter final with a Wits Partner.

M. Mitton reached the quarter final in the women’s singles and doubles.

K. Roberts, J Basson and A. Liebenberg reached the quarter finals in the women’s doubles.

Without any star players the Tuks players really did well at the tournament and showed all that they earned their stripes.
