Quarter 1, 2017

BSc Int:  Second year

Co-ordinator:  Zakkiya Khan

The second year students have been introduced to a variety of projects which are more specific to the discipline of interior design.

During week 1, students were tasked with creating a class portrait which reflected both the collective and individual identity of their class.  The aim of this exercise was to encourage studio interaction and help students re-boot their creative thinking abilities at the start of the year.

The second project involved the design of a stand at Decorex which showcased a colour experience for the Paint by Conran range.  This project introduced students to the typology of stand design, which overlapped with exhibition design and introduced an element of branding with Color by Conran being the showcased product.  The result was a variety of conceptually strong projects which exhibited palettes in creative manners within the constraints of the site dimensions, temporality and assembly and disassembly.

The third project, “On Altering Architecture”, required students to document and propose an intervention for a threshold of an existing building on campus and its significance.  With reference to the Burra Charter, students familiarised themselves with the language of drawing particular to the interior designer as an “interventionist”, who reacts to existing built form through a design proposal.  Students were required to build models of their proposed intervention and relate the design concept to the site significance.

Millennial retail design within Hatfield Plaza was the interface driven project fort the third year Interior Design students.  The current tenant mix, the context and target user influenced the development of retail branding strategies into 3D brand personalities.  Students used a variety of media for exploration in the design and conceptual development:  model building, sketching, computer editing and photography.  The design complexity was grounded in a precedent study and integrated lighting design by means of applying lighting design theory.
