2016 ILASA Conference

Posted on April 24, 2017

The 2016 ILASA Conference held on 29 & 30 September 2016 at the CSIR Conference Centre in Pretoria was a major success. The Conference considered the re-interpretation of landscape significance and probed into the ways perceptions of landscape are changing in the African context and beyond, and how these manifest in the projects executed in South Africa and other countries.

Renowned keynote speakers Mario Schjetnan from GrupoUrbano, Mexico and Astrid Sykes from Mia Lehrer and Associates delivered exciting presentations of their work. Tunji Adejumo, the current IFLA Africa President, from Nigeria gave us food for thought on approaches toward Landscape in Africa. Two iconic speakers from our own milieu were Patrick Watson and Elsa Pooley – these leaders in our industry needed no introduction and the audience just soaked up their thoughts. The conference presented a learning and inspiration opportunity for all.

The conference managed to draw speakers from the broader green industry professions and we were proud to have DEA, SAGIC and LaRRSSA representatives. In the paper presentations design projects, case studies and theoretical proposals were presented that demonstrate positive interventions to re-evaluate and re-interpret landscape. Submissions for these presentations went through a rigorous blind peer review process and good interaction and feedback were provided by the audience.

A lovely cocktail evening allowed guests to mingle with the keynote speakers, old friends and new acquaintances. A student competition and Wetland Rehabilitation and Construction Course were held along with the main conference – they were both very successful. The conference organisers believe that the conference and these ancillary activities contributed to the diverse interpretations of landscape and will add value to Landscape Architecture and design education and practice in South Africa, and internationally.
