Development Studies is a growth field in the Faculty of Humanities. The Faculty recognizes that this is a critical area for study, teaching and research for South African students as well as students from the rest of the African continent.
The teaching component of the Development Studies programme is likely to shift in future from the present Hons degree level to the Masters degree level, leading to the introduction of a taught Masters (probably in the form of an M.phil in Development Studies). A taught Masters is likely to appeal to prospective students already working in the broad field of development as well as to students who have just completed their undergraduate studies.
