ANNOUNCEMENT

PRESIDENT OF THE CONVOCATION: EXPIRY OF MR HAESE’S TERM OF OFFICE AND POSTPONEMENT OF THE ELECTION PROCESS

The five-year term of office of the current President of the Convocation, Mr Leo Haese, expires in August 2017. In accordance with the current Institutional Rules (Rt 225/12) for the Election of the President of the Convocation of the University of Pretoria, the process for the election of a new President should therefore commence at this stage.

Against the background of the request by Council and the Executive that:

1. The Registrar review the structure of TuksAlumni by inter alia conducting a benchmarking exercise with the relevant practices at other higher education institutions and draft a submission on a proposed new structure for TuksAlumni, which is to serve before the Standing Committee of Council and Council in November 2017; and

2. the fact that the current Institutional Rules should be reviewed or confirmed every five years;

it was deemed prudent to postpone the election process for the election of a new President of the Convocation.

At its meeting of 28 June 2017, Council approved that the election of a new President of the Convocation be postponed until such time as the TuksAlumni structure has been reviewed and the concomitant Institutional Rules related to the Election of the President of the Convocation have been amended or confirmed.

Paragraph 46(3) of the Statute makes provision for the Vice-Chancellor and Principal to act as President of the Convocation in the event of the office of President becoming vacant and will act as such until the Convocation has elected a new President.

We wish to express our most sincere gratitude for the exemplary manner in which Mr Haese has fulfilled the role as President of the Convocation of the University since his election in 2012.

The University wishes him well for the future and trusts that he will continue his close association with not only the Alumni structure but also with the University community as a whole.
