You can also use the Career Services (CS). They concentrate on positions for young graduates and student work. Visit the Career Services offices at the Old Chemisty Bld, Room  1.5.2 on the Hatfield Campus from Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 16:00.

TuksAlumni Pretoria East’s mentorship programme gains momentum 
 
The complexity of the work environment has emphasised the importance of networks such as alumni organisations more than ever, not only in the business world, but also in most professions. Due to the unemployment factor, restructuring and a number of other challenges, the work environment has become even more complex. Even new graduates in different sectors find it difficult to find employment due to a lack of experience.  

TuksAlumni Pretoria East (TAPE) hosted a function in the Club Hall on the Hatfield Campus to launch its mentorship programme and meet potential mentors on 28 October 2013. The aim of the project is to start a mentorship programme that will support and mentor new graduates who are struggling to find jobs and those who do not have the necessary experience. The programme will start early in 2014 and will continue throughout the year. The mentors will regularly report to the committee and the success of the programme will be evaluated after 12 months.

According to TAPE, a mentor is any alumna or alumnus of the University who understands and supports the necessity of mentorship in his or her industry. It is someone who is interested in guiding a person with less knowledge and skills in order to gain the knowledge and skills that are necessary to make a productive contribution to the industry. Mentorship should not be confused with an internship, as the graduate will not necessarily be earning a salary.

The programme envisions a small start but, as time goes by, it will hopefully grow into something of which the University and alumni can be proud. If someone adds to his or her CV the fact that he or she participated in UP’s mentorship programme, it should count in that person’s favour.

The aim is that each graduate will participate in the project for a year and that TuksAlumni Pretoria East will receive feedback on everyone’s progress on a regular basis.  This is a unique project for TuksAlumni, because it is the first of its kind.
