Welcome to the Department of Agricultural Economics, Extension and Rural Development, where we are passionate about the field of agribusiness and agricultural development. Agricultural economics is the very heart of the development agenda and a huge incentive and lever for change in society. As such, agricultural economists play a central role in a wide range of essential professional services in the agricultural and food sector. Through our research, innovative teaching methods and public engagement, we continue to make a contribution to raising incomes, reducing inequalities, improving food security and reducing malnutrition.

Our programmes are focused on understanding the complex agricultural industry and we are proud to have leading agricultural economists and researchers with extensive experience in their fields as part of our team. Our graduates are able to enter various areas within the industry including the research and development space, where they provide essential evidence for policy and business decision making across a range of private, public and parastatal sector institutions. Our graduates are also able to  enter the agricultural commodity trading sector, providing strategic advice to the companies and farmers on agribusiness decisions related to profitability, market opportunities and sustainability.
