The University of Pretoria has a long tradition of excellence in education, training and research in the water field. Water Utilisation at Tukkies is recognized as a national and world leader in this field.

The Water Utilisation Division was established in 1969 when Rand Water decided to fund a Chair in Water Utilisation Engineering at the University of Pretoria.

A second Chair was introduced in 1998 when ERWAT agreed to fund the Chair in Waste Water Management in the Water Utilisation Division.

The Sedibeng Water Chair in Water Utilisation Engineering was established in 2014.

The Division has over the years produced excellent graduates who have made and are making significant contributions in activities related to water.
