#TuksFootball: UP-Tuks is in for a tough battle against UWC in Varsity Football semi-final

Posted on September 14, 2017

The UP-Tuks football players will have to keep the saying about a particular "Fat Lady" that needs to sing in mind when they take to the field to play against UWC this afternoon in the semi-final of the Varsity Football Tournament.

On Monday night UP-Tuks managed to beat UWC 2-1 to secure a home semi-final. To play the same team again three days later in a winner takes all scenario is not going to be easy. The players will have to be on their guard.

Claudio de Almeida (midfielder) emphasised that there is no chance the team being complacent.

"We will be making a huge mistake if we think it will be the same result again or the same game. Our coaches have been emphasizing that to us especially since there is so much at stake. The winner goes on to play in the final while it is 'game over' for the loser.

"Playing UWC is never easy because they don't know the meaning of the words "give up". At halftime, they were 2-0 down, but they kept fighting until the final whistle blew. "

According to De Almeida UP-Tuks does not have a good track record against UWC.

"In the past, there were games where we were leading but due UWC's never say die attitude we ended in a draw or losing the game."

De Almeida is of the opinion that having a home crowd support will be a major advantage.

"There is something special about playing at the Tuks Stadium in front of our fans. As a player, I can vouch for it that you do get inspired by the chants."

De Almeida does not foresee that there is going to be a drastic change in the UP-Tuks game plan the second time around against UWC.

"It will be substantial for us to focus on what we do best. That is to move the ball around and to create scoring opportunities if we can manage to do that it does not matter who we play.

"But because we are playing UWC, it will be important to try and score as quickly as possible. The longer the game goes on, the more confident they tend to get.

"To summarise, we cannot afford to waste goal scoring opportunities."
