Posted on January 25, 2018

During the annual meeting of the Society for Practical Theology in South Africa (SPTSA) in January 2018, Professor Yolanda Dreyer was presented with a Festschrift acknowledging her international and national recognition as a practical theologian and feminist scholar. She was a keynote speaker at the meeting, with her contribution titled ‘Weak, emotional woman should know her place: empathy and resilience as resistance’.

Dreyer was the first female lecturer of the Faculty of Theology and Religion at UP and the first female ordained minister of the Afrikaans-speaking churches in South Africa. She completed a Master of Theology at Princeton Theological Seminary and is currently part of a core research group, “New directions in Practical Theology”, which meets at Princeton annually. She is part of the “Global network of theologians” of the World Communion of Reformed Churches (WCRC).

Dreyer has published over 80 academic articles and is a NRF-rated researcher. The Festschrift was published and dedicated to her in recognition of her local and international impact. It was published as a volume of HTS Theological Studies, of which she is the associate editor. The volume boasts contributions by scholars from a wide variety of academic institutions, ranging from the United States, to the Netherlands, Austria, Australia, the United Kingdom and South Africa. The cover image was designed specifically for the volume by the Dutch-South African artist, Andrea van der Kuil. The volume was presented by the assistant-editor of HTS Theological Studies, Dr Tanya van Wyk.
