The Centre for Human Rights, Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria invites you to a panel discussion on the protection of the rights of older women within the framework of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Older Persons in Africa (Protocol on the Rights of Older Persons).

Background

The Centre recognises the historic and limited attention that the rights of older persons have received within the human rights discourse and the difficult conditions under which older persons live in Africa. This event is part of the Centre’s year-long campaign #AgeWithRights, which focuses on creating awareness and strengthening the human rights of older persons in Africa, especially the rights of older women.
The panel discussion will feature experts in the field including state representatives and civil society organisations from Southern Africa.

Issues for exploration and debate:

  • Harmful traditional practices including witchcraft accusations
  • Violence, sexual abuse and discrimination
  • Abuses related to land, property and inheritance rights
  • Access to health care
  • Access to social protection
  • Disability
