Prof Josua Meyer receives A-rating from NRF

Posted on December 07, 2017

Prof Josua Meyer, Head of the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology, is the latest researcher from the University of Pretoria to receive an A-rating from the National Research Foundation (NRF). He is currently the only A-rated researcher in Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering in South Africa.

The NRF rating system forms part of the Foundation’s goal to build a globally competitive science system in South Africa, and benchmarks the quality of local researchers against the rest of the world. The rating process considers a researcher’s recent research outputs and impact as perceived by international peer reviewers. An A-rating is the highest rating, conferred on individuals who are unequivocally recognised by their peers as leading international scholars in their field.

Prof Meyer joined the University of Pretoria as professor and Head of the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering in 2002. In 2004, he was also appointed as Chair of the School of Engineering. He is now serving his fourth term as both Head of Department and School Chair. In addition to these duties, Prof Meyer leads the Clean Energy Research Group that he established in the Department, where his work focuses on thermal-solar, wind and nuclear energy. He has grown this group to approximately 50 full-time graduate students and ten staff members over the years. He has also established various labs with state-of-the-art instrumentation, and with his group members has designed and constructed more than 12 unique experimental set-ups.

The Faculty is extremely proud of Prof Meyer, and congratulates him on his latest exceptional achievement.
