Supply Chain Management degree programme to obtain European accreditation

Posted on November 23, 2017

The Department of Business Management at the University of Pretoria is the first South African university department to obtain European Logistics Association (ELA) accreditation in recognition of the quality and standard of the BCom Supply Chain Management degree programme offered by this department in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences.

The BCom Supply Chain Management programme was initiated in 2008 with the first cohort of students completing their degrees at the end of 2010. Since then, the programme has grown substantially in light of severe skills shortages in this field.

Wesley Niemann, lecturer and accreditation lead, says the accreditation of this programme is a milestone in the history of the programme and a testimony of the quality of the programme curricula and delivery. 'It is an exciting time for the Department as we constantly adapt, improve and grow our supply chain management offering to meet the changing needs of industry. We work closely with various industry associations and senior practitioners to stay abreast of the latest developments in this dynamic discipline.'

The ELA is a federation of more than 30 national logistics associations, covering Central and Western Europe and beyond. The association provides an international forum for networking and the promotion and development of the logistics and supply chain profession. The ELA accreditation standards of logistics competence were developed by practitioners and are updated regularly to ensure it reflects the developing role of the supply chain professional.

ELA certification and standards of competence are widely recognised internationally. Qualifying holders of the BCom Supply Chain Management degree will be certified as candidate European Junior Logisticians (cEJLog) and can upgrade to the full junior certification after obtaining relevant work experience. 'This increases the mobility of our supply chain management graduates. ELA certification recognises people's competence, making the certificate extremely attractive for serving as a basis for employment,' says Niemann.
