Professor Stephanie Burton, Vice-Principal for Research and Postgraduate Education at the University of Pretoria, invites you to attend a seminar focusing on ethically responsible research titled: Human research participants and the ethically responsible advancement of science to be presented by Felice J Levine of the American Educational Research Association.

Dr Felice J Levine is the executive director of the American Educational Research Association. Dr Levine is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Educational Research Association, and the Association for Psychological Science, and an elected member of the International Statistical Institute. She is President-elect of the World Education Research Association (WERA). As a social psychologist, Dr Levine focuses on research and science policy issues, research ethics, data access and sharing, the scientific and academic workforce, and higher education.

Research in the human sciences embraces a spectrum of research methods and modes of inquiry from field and laboratory experiments to surveys, observation, interviews, and the use of extant data. This presentation will map some of the core considerations in the review and conduct of such research with special attention to issues of consent, privacy and confidentiality; data protection and data use, and risk and risk reduction. Drawing upon recent reflections and experiences in the United States, the talk will address key issues in aligning and improving regulations and practices to facilitate human research protection and the advancement knowledge.
