Women's Day Message to staff and students from the Vice-Chancellor and Principal

Posted on August 08, 2017

On 9 August South Africans commemorate the historic march of 20 000 women to the Union Buildings in protest against the discriminatory pass laws of the time.

In 2017 we can reflect on how far South Africa has come in terms of promoting women's rights, including access to education, and acknowledge the heroic women of 1956 who stood up for their rights. The courage of these great women laid the foundation for present day women, irrespective of race and class, to take up leadership roles in business, government and society.

At the University we are proud that women students form the majority of our student cohort. Our autumn and spring graduation ceremonies are testimony to the impact that UP is making on South African society through our increased throughput of women graduates. Additionally, we recognise that our women alumni are making waves and excelling in government and in a wide range of industries both locally and abroad. These women, and their positive contribution to the country, are manifestations of UP's relevance and excellence in society.

Today the University of Pretoria acknowledges and celebrates the achievements of all women staff, students and alumni who contribute to the vision.
