The Department of Physics of the University of Pretoria is proud to host the 50th Annual Conference of the SAIP, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the South African Institute of Physics as well as the World Year of Physics.

Aim

The aim of this conference is to present a forum for communication between physicists from South Africa and other African countries which are engaged in applied and fundamental physics. Furthermore, post-graduate students and teachers will be exposed to a variety of research activities in physics.

Scientific Programme

The programme from Tuesday 5 July to Thursday 7 July 2005 will consist of plenary sessions of general interest, parallel specialist sessions, non-specialist lectures and poster sessions. The following parallel sessions are planned:
  • Solid State Physics and Materials Science Physics
  • Nuclear, Particle and Radiation Physics
  • Laser, Photonics and Spectrometry
  • Astrophysics and Space Science
  • Education
  • Applied and Industrial Physics
  • Biological and Medical Physics
  • Theoretical and Computational Physics

Deadlines

  • 15 April 2005: Abstract Submission
  • 27 May 2005: Acceptance of abstracts:
    Due to the large number of abstracts received the review process is taking a bit longer than anticipated. You should receive your letter of acceptance by 2 June 2005.
     
  • 3 June 2005: Payment for Early Bird Registration
  • 3 June 2005: Payment for accommodation
  • 24 June 2005: Closing date for registration
     
 

Winter School: Biophysics

The conference will be preceded by a one day winter school on Biophysics on Monday 4 July 2005. The level of the talks will be of such a nature that students and young researchers will benefit from attending them.
