The history of the Pretoria Academic Hospital, previously known as the Volks Hospital, later the Pretoria Hospital and then the HF Verwoerd Hospital, dates back to 1888 when the first patient was admitted to a house acquired for this purpose. Only 15 beds were available.
At present the Pretoria Academic Hospital has 999 beds of which 34 have been set aside for intensive care units.
The hospital has a personnel corps of approximately 5000, of which 600 are doctors and 2000 nurses, as well as 320 paramedics, 160 technicians and an administrative and support corps.
The word "Kalafong" means "place of healing". This hospital is situated on 17 hectares of land and has a total of 1200 beds. The chief superintendent is assisted by a staff of 3500, of which 300 are doctors and 1500 are nursing staff.
The Weskoppies Hospital has approximately 1400 beds and a bed occupation figure of
95%. Approximately 5000 patients are admitted annually, whilst the out-patient section
handles approximately 5200 patients per year. Undergraduates, as well as
post-graduate training is offered to students in a comprehensive continual manner.
